How to Read a Launch Monitor Report: Understanding Your Own Numbers

Launch monitors have become widely accessible through club fittings, simulator sessions, and consumer devices, but many golfers who receive a data report afterward don't fully understand what the numbers mean. Here is a practical guide to the key metrics.

Club Head Speed and Ball Speed

Club head speed measures how fast the club is moving at impact. Ball speed measures how fast the ball leaves the face, and it's the more important number of the two for distance, since it directly reflects the actual energy transferred to the ball — including the effect of how centred your strike was. The ratio between ball speed and club head speed is called 'smash factor,' with 1.50 being close to the practical maximum for a driver under current COR/CT rules, discussed in our COR and driver physics article.

Launch Angle and Spin Rate

These two numbers together determine how efficiently your ball speed converts into carry distance, covered in detail in our launch angle and spin rate article. If your ball speed is high but your carry distance seems disappointing, launch angle or spin rate — not swing speed — is usually the explanation.

Spin Axis

This number, usually reported in degrees left or right of vertical, tells you how much your shot is curving and in which direction — a spin axis of 0 is a perfectly straight shot with no curve, while larger positive or negative numbers indicate more severe hooks or slices, directly connected to the face-to-path relationship in our ball flight laws article.

Attack Angle

This measures whether the club is moving up or down at the moment of impact. A negative (downward) attack angle is normal and desirable with irons, which are meant to be struck with a descending blow. A positive (upward) attack angle is desirable with the driver, since hitting up on the ball with a driver reduces spin and increases carry distance for most swing speeds.

Using This Data Practically

The value of a launch monitor report isn't in memorising every number, but in identifying which specific metric is furthest from your intended target and directing your practice or equipment decisions there — rather than guessing at swing changes based on feel alone.
