Understanding COR and Why Your Driver Can't Legally Go Faster
Every legal driver on the market today is capped by a physics rule most golfers have never heard of: Coefficient of Restitution, or COR. Understanding it explains why driver technology has plateaued in recent years and why claims of 'illegal distance gains' from a new driver should always be treated with scepticism.
What COR Actually Measures
COR measures the transfer of energy between the clubface and the ball at impact, on a scale of 0 to 1. A COR of 0 means no energy transfers at all; a COR of 1 would mean a perfectly elastic collision with all energy transferred. Since 1998, the USGA and R&A have capped the COR of a legal driver face at 0.830, with a tolerance that effectively sets the working limit at 0.822 (source: USGA Equipment Rules archive).
Why the Rule Exists
In the late 1990s, ultra-thin titanium driver faces began flexing at impact like a trampoline — the so-called 'spring-like effect' — and ball speeds climbed rapidly. The governing bodies stepped in specifically to stop distance gains from technology outpacing the game's courses. Every driver you can legally buy today, from a $150 budget model to a $600 tour driver, sits at or just under this same energy-transfer ceiling.
Characteristic Time: The Modern Test
Since 2004, COR has largely been superseded by a related test called Characteristic Time (CT), which uses a pendulum striking the face and measures how long the ball and face stay in contact. CT and COR track each other closely but CT is faster and cheaper to test in the field, which is why USGA officials use portable CT testing rigs at tour events.
What This Means When You're Buying a Driver
Because every conforming driver on the market sits at essentially the same legal ceiling for face-based ball speed, the actual distance differences between competing premium drivers come from elsewhere — aerodynamics, forgiveness on off-centre strikes, and optimised launch conditions, not a 'hotter face.' The Practical Takeaway
A driver marketed as producing significant extra ball speed compared to a rival premium model within the same generation is very unlikely to be doing so through the clubface alone — both are almost certainly near the legal COR/CT ceiling. Genuine distance gains for recreational golfers come far more reliably from proper club fitting than from chasing marginal face technology claims.
