What Compression Actually Measures

Compression is a measurement of how much a golf ball deforms under a standardised load — historically measured on a scale where lower numbers indicate a softer ball (around 70-80 compression) and higher numbers indicate a firmer ball (around 90-100+ compression). It says nothing directly about performance; it is purely a measure of firmness.

The Half-Truth About Swing Speed Matching

The common advice — slower swing speeds should use lower compression balls, faster swing speeds should use higher compression balls — has some physical basis, since a slower swing speed struggles to fully compress a very firm ball, potentially costing some distance and feel.
