Lie angle — the angle between the shaft and the ground when the club is properly soled — is one of the most impactful fitting specifications for accuracy, yet it's frequently overlooked by golfers buying off-the-rack equipment built to a single standard specification regardless of the buyer's height or posture.

How Incorrect Lie Angle Affects Your Shots

If a club's lie angle is too upright for your posture and swing, the toe of the club will sit up off the ground at impact, which tends to push shots left of target (for a right-handed player). If the lie angle is too flat, the heel sits up, which tends to push shots right of target. Critically, a golfer with consistently poor lie angle fitting may make swing compensations to correct for this over time, effectively building a habitual manipulation into their swing to counteract equipment that doesn't match their setup.

How Lie Angle Fitting Works

A fitter uses either impact tape (which shows exactly where on the sole the club contacted the ground) or a launch monitor's directional data to determine whether your natural swing produces a toe-down or heel-down pattern, then adjusts the lie angle of the club — a process most iron heads can accommodate through bending, within a limited range, without needing an entirely different head.

Why Height Alone Isn't a Reliable Guide

Lie angle fitting based purely on height charts, sometimes offered as a simplified in-store option, is considerably less accurate than a genuine dynamic fitting, since posture, arm length relative to height, and swing plane all affect the correct lie angle independently of height alone. Two golfers of identical height can require noticeably different lie angles based on these other factors.
