Elite golfers share one biomechanical trait that separates them from recreational players regardless of flexibility or strength: the kinematic sequence, the specific order in which body segments accelerate and decelerate through the downswing.

What the Kinematic Sequence Is

Biomechanics research on tour professionals — much of it conducted using 3D motion capture by organisations like the Titleist Performance Institute — consistently shows an efficient downswing sequence in a specific order: the hips reach peak rotational speed first, followed by the torso, then the arms, then finally the club itself, which reaches maximum speed last, at or just before impact. This is sometimes called the 'kinetic chain' or the 'proximal-to-distal sequence,' and it mirrors the same principle used in throwing and striking motions across many sports.

Why Recreational Golfers Get This Backwards

Many amateur golfers, particularly those who consciously try to 'swing hard,' fire their arms and hands first from the top of the backswing, before the hips and torso have rotated. Training the Correct Sequence

The most effective drill for retraining sequencing is the 'step change' or 'pump drill,' where a golfer takes a small lateral step or bump toward the target with the lower body before allowing the arms and club to follow. This deliberately exaggerates the correct hip-first initiation until it becomes the default pattern. Why Flexibility Still Matters
