Iron Lofts Have Changed Dramatically: Why Your 7-Iron Isn't What It Used to Be

If you've compared a modern game-improvement iron set to one from twenty years ago, you may have noticed the lofts look strangely strong. A modern 7-iron commonly carries a loft of 27-28 degrees — a loft that would have been stamped '6-iron' or even '5-iron' on a set from the 1990s. This is not a mistake; it's a deliberate, industry-wide trend called 'loft jacking.'

What's Actually Happening

Manufacturers have progressively strengthened (reduced) the lofts on each numbered iron across generations of product releases. A traditional 7-iron loft was around 34 degrees; many current game-improvement 7-irons sit at 27-28 degrees — closer to a traditional 5-iron. This makes each numbered iron in a modern set fly further than its equivalent number did a generation ago, which allows manufacturers to advertise longer distances for the same swing speed.

Why This Matters When Comparing Sets

Because there is no industry standard governing what loft a '7-iron' must carry, directly comparing 'distance with my 7-iron' between two different brands, or even two different models from the same brand, is close to meaningless without checking actual loft specifications. A Titleist players' iron 7-iron and a Callaway maximum game-improvement 7-iron can differ by 4-5 degrees of loft — more than a full club's worth of distance. The Gapping Problem It Creates

Strengthened iron lofts have created a secondary issue: the gap between a driver (roughly 10.5 degrees) and a strengthened set's longest iron can be enormous, and the gap at the wedge end can leave players with a large yardage hole between their strengthened pitching wedge and their sand wedge. This is precisely why hybrids and dedicated gap wedges have become far more common in recreational bags than they were a generation ago — they exist specifically to fill distance gaps that loft jacking created.

What to Actually Do About It

Ignore the number stamped on the sole entirely when comparing irons across brands or eras. Compare the actual loft specification, and if you're building or replacing part of a set, always check that your longest iron or hybrid, your shortest iron, and your wedges form a consistent distance progression with no large gaps — a proper fitting session will confirm this for you directly.
